In 1956, the United States Navy issued the requirements for an all-purpose jet trainer to America's aviation industry. The requirements called for an aircraft capable of handling the total jet-training syllabus from transition and intermediate jet training to carrier qualification, gunnery training and advanced training. North American Aviation, the major producer of Navy training aircraft for many years was chosen to built the new jet trainer, designated the T2J-1 "Buckeye."
